UPDATE ON YACHT PHOENIX

During the first half of 2019, based on a new diving survey, the Board of Directors of The Phoenix of Hiroshima Project, Inc. determined that:

1) salvage after 9 years under (brackish) water is probably no longer feasible,

2) donations over those 9 years have brought in only $24,271.97 of the total $87,000 needed to raise (salvage) the brave wooden boat gently from the Mokelumne River, bring her to shore, dry her out carefully to keep her intact, evaluate her condition and transport her to a shipyard for restoration.

And 3) her sister ship, Golden Rule, already restored, was ready to sail on a circuit of the Pacific (Hawaii, Wake, Marshall Islands) spreading the word about the continuing dangers of nuclear power, and the poisoning of the air, water and soil from the entire nuclear cycle, from uranium mining to the disposal of nuclear waste. But the boat was having to delay sailing from San Diego until the engine could be replaced–for an estimated $11,000.

All Phoenix donors were contacted and asked for their opinion on how to spend the money left in the Phoenix account. Most of those who responded wanted at least some of it to go to the Golden Rule to replace their engine. Accordingly, the Board agreed unanimously to donate $11,000 to the Golden Rule and sent the money to the VFPGoldenRuleProject http://www.vfpgoldenruleproject.org/ on June 12, 2019. With the remaining money in the Phoenix account, donors want the Board to look into the possibility of having a full-scale replica of the Phoenix built, perhaps where the original boat was built–in Hiroshima.
